Spinal Interneurons

Spinal Interneurons

Autor: Lyandysha Viktorovna Zholudeva , Michael Aron Lane

Número de Páginas: 476

The spinal cord is comprised of four types of neurons: motor neurons, pre-ganglionic neurons, ascending projection neurons, and spinal interneurons. Interneurons are neurons that process information within local circuits, and have an incredible ability for neuroplasticity, whether due to persistent activity, neural injury, or in response to disease. Although, by definition, their axons are restricted to the same structure as the soma (in this case the spinal cord), spinal interneurons are capable of sprouting and rewiring entire neural circuits, and contribute to some restoration of disrupted neural communication after injury to the spinal cord (i.e., "bypassing the lesion site). Spinal Interneurons provides a focused overview of how scientists classify interneurons in general, the techniques used to identify subsets of interneurons, their roles in specific neural circuits, and the scientific evidence for their neuroplasticity. Understanding the capacity for neuroplasticity and identity of specific spinal interneurons that are optimal for recovery, may help determine cellular candidates for developing therapies. Spinal Interneurons provides neuroscientists, clinicians, and...

Exploring Evidence for Neurorehabilitation Advancements

Exploring Evidence for Neurorehabilitation Advancements

Autor: Hideki Nakano , Masahiro Sakita , Kosuke Oku , Tomotaka Ito , Akiyoshi Matsugi

Número de Páginas: 340

Neuroscience-based rehabilitation is called neurorehabilitation. Specifically, neurorehabilitation is defined as "concepts, evaluation methods, treatments, and equipment that apply brain theories and other findings revealed by neuroscience and related research to rehabilitation. Physical dysfunction, including central nervous system disease, alters the body's representation in the brain, resulting in stagnation of motor function recovery. Therefore, neuroscience-based rehabilitation is essential to reconstruct the altered body representation in the brain. However, the evidence for neurorehabilitation is still insufficient, and it is critical to build upon this evidence to provide optimal rehabilitation and maximize motor function recovery. Many fundamental studies on neuroplasticity, motor control and motor learning theory, brain function measurement, non-invasive brain stimulation, and advanced technologies such as brain-machine interface, AI, and regenerative medicine have been reported in recent years. The integration of neuroscience and cutting-edge research related to neuroscience has excellent potential to contribute to the development of neurorehabilitation.

The Spike

The Spike

Autor: Mark Humphries

Número de Páginas: 232

The story of a neural impulse and what it reveals about how our brains work We see the last cookie in the box and think, can I take that? We reach a hand out. In the 2.1 seconds that this impulse travels through our brain, billions of neurons communicate with one another, sending blips of voltage through our sensory and motor regions. Neuroscientists call these blips “spikes.” Spikes enable us to do everything: talk, eat, run, see, plan, and decide. In The Spike, Mark Humphries takes readers on the epic journey of a spike through a single, brief reaction. In vivid language, Humphries tells the story of what happens in our brain, what we know about spikes, and what we still have left to understand about them. Drawing on decades of research in neuroscience, Humphries explores how spikes are born, how they are transmitted, and how they lead us to action. He dives into previously unanswered mysteries: Why are most neurons silent? What causes neurons to fire spikes spontaneously, without input from other neurons or the outside world? Why do most spikes fail to reach any destination? Humphries presents a new vision of the brain, one where fundamental computations are carried out by...

The Brain in Motion

The Brain in Motion

Autor: Sten Grillner

Número de Páginas: 287

An evolutionary perspective—from lampreys to humans—on how the forebrain coordinates movement while the networks in the brainstem and spinal cord handle the execution. All living creatures interact with their environment: even the most basic have a set of innate motor circuits they rely on to feed, locomote, fight, and flee. In The Brain in Motion, Sten Grillner describes the evolution of the motor repertoire of vertebrates, from protovertebrates to primates. With breadth and depth, Grillner explores how the brain uses the different microcircuits in the brainstem and spinal cord, coordinating them through commands from the forebrain. He also considers the normal function of the brain as a platform for understanding clinical conditions such as stroke, Parkinson´s and Huntington´s diseases, and spinal cord injury. Grillner also explains in The Brain in Motion how the remarkable finding that the lamprey forebrain has all the components of the mammalian one has radically changed scientists’ views on the evolutionary origin of the vertebrate forebrain. We now know that the basic organization evolved 560 rather than 300 million years ago, as was previously thought. The...

Autor: Francisco Espinosa Maestre
