Spinning and Weaving

Spinning and Weaving

Autor: Lynn Huggins-cooper

Número de Páginas: 145

A look at the extensive history of the folkcraft, its presence in the modern world, and resources to help beginners enter the world of textile artistry. This book offers a whistle-stop guide to the history of spinning and weaving. The story begins in prehistory when people first wove yarns to create clothing and blankets. The book explores how spinning and weaving have continued to be important throughout human history (or should that be herstory), in artistic, economic, and functional terms. The second part of the book brings us up to date, via interviews with modern-day spinning and weaving artisans. These textiles artists generously allowed the author a window into their studios and discussed the way they use and adapt traditional methods, techniques, and tools for the twenty-first century. Photos of their work and their working environment offer a unique view into the world of this ancient craft. Finally, if you are inspired to try your hand at this fascinating art, the book also has a resources section. It includes a valuable list of suppliers of fiber, dyes, tools, and yarn, as well as information about training courses, useful websites, and more—everything you need to get ...

Spinning Test Particles

Spinning Test Particles

Autor: Velandia-heredia, Nelson

Número de Páginas: 84

One of the purposes of this thesis is to study the gravitomagnetic effects. These effects are derived by the analogy between Coulomb’s law and Newton’s gravitation law. There is a relationship between Maxwell’s equations and the linearized Einstein equations. Therefore, our rst step will be to linearize the Einstein field equations and compare them with some electromagnetic phenomena. Then, we will take the MPD equations given by Plyastsko et al. for a spinning test particle orbiting around a rotating massive body. Since it is not possible to nd an analytical solution for the set of eleven coupled differential equations, we will give a numerical solution for the case when the spinning test particle orbits in a Kerr metric. The main contribution of this work is to yield the numerical solution for the case of spinning particles around a rotating gravitational eld. On the other hand, one nds that the majority of works give the analytical solution for particular cases such as spinless test particles in the Schwarzschild metric and in the equatorial planes or the spin values constricted in the time. We calculate the trajectories of spinning test particles in rotating...

Apparatus for Studying Ball Spinning Friction

Apparatus for Studying Ball Spinning Friction

Autor: Steven T. Miller , Richard Jay Parker , Erwin V. Zaretsky

Número de Páginas: 20

An experimental apparatus was designed and constructed at the NASA Lewis Research Center to study one aspect of spinning friction based on interfacial slip over the entire ball-race contact area. The apparatus is capable of measuring spinning moments of less than 0. Ol inch-pound at maximum Hertz contact stresses to over 400 000 psi, speeds to 3500 rpm, and under varying contact configurations and conditions. From the torque measurement, a coefficient of spinning friction can be calculated. The apparatus comprises a drive assembly, a dead-weight load assembly, a spherical upper test specimen, a cylindrically grooved lower test specimen of varying conformity, a lower test specimen housing assembly incorporating a hydrostatic air-bearing assembly, and a torque-measuring system. In operation, the upper test specimen is loaded against the lower test specimen through the drive shaft assembly by the dead- weight load assembly. As the drive assembly is rotated, the upper test specimen rotates against the stationary lower test specimen actuating the torque-measuring system. Preliminary tests were conducted under varying Hertz stress to 136 000-psi maximum Hertz stress at a spinning speed...

The Complete Technology Book on Textile Spinning, Weaving, Finishing and Printing (3rd Revised Edition)

The Complete Technology Book on Textile Spinning, Weaving, Finishing and Printing (3rd Revised Edition)

Autor: Niir Board Of Consultants & Engineers

Número de Páginas: 305

Textile industry is one of the few basic industries, which is characterised as a necessary component of human life. One may classify it as a more glamorous industry, but whatever it is, it provides with the basic requirement called clothes. Spinning is the process of converting cotton or manmade fibre into yarn to be used for weaving and knitting. Weaving is a method of textile production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Finishing refers to the processes that convert the woven or knitted cloth into a usable material. Printing is the process of applying colour to fabric in definite patterns or designs. The textile industry occupies an important position in the total volume of merchandise trade across countries. Developing countries account for little over two-third of world exports in textiles and clothing. It is the second largest employer after agriculture, providing employment to over 45 million people directly and 60 million people indirectly. The future for the textile industry looks promising, buoyed by both strong domestic consumption as well as export demand. This book is based on the latest technology...

Comparison of Conventional and Microasperity Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of a Ball Spinning in a Nonconforming Groove

Comparison of Conventional and Microasperity Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of a Ball Spinning in a Nonconforming Groove

Autor: Charles W. Allen , Dennis P. Townsend , Erwin V. Zaretsky

Número de Páginas: 36

An analysis was developed for the microasperity elastohydrodynamic lubrication of a ball spinning in a nonconforming groove. This analysis was compared to the conventional elastohydrodynamic analysis of a ball spinning in a nonconforming groove. Rheological models for a di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate, a super-refined naphthenic mineral oil, and a polyphenyl ether (5P4E) were constructed from spinning torque data by using both analyses. The value of the lubricant pressure-viscosity coefficient that makes the data fit the analyses of the fluids differs somewhat from published data. For all three lubricants, an exponential composite model best described the lubricant rheology. Good agreement existed with the experimental and analytical values of torque for both the conventional and microasperity elastohydrodynamic analysis for a spinning ball in a nonconforming groove.

Spinning into Oblivion

Spinning into Oblivion

Autor: Santhosh Gangadharan

Número de Páginas: 160

San, the protagonist, is disturbed by strange recurring dreams in which by spinning at high speeds he is able to meet and talk to his dead parents. While at a safari in the dunes of Dubai, he encounters ghostly shapes dancing amidst a Turkish tanoura dancer, Ahmed Mansour. His acquaintance with Mansour takes him to Konya, where he learns of the teachings of the Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and the practice of Sufi swirling. Just as he feels he is close to the truth, a beautiful dame, Damla, runs into them, creating more complications. San learns that the theory of evolution of souls and the magical influence of the great Mevlana of Konya would make one ponder over their own lives. Mahmoud makes him understand that by creating awareness of ones own birthplace, the individual could stay close to his roots and thereby to his heart. On the advice of Mahmoud, the grand old man of Konya, the three of them embark on a trip across Asia to find their roots. The enigma that is Damla and the history of the equatorial wilderness of Borneo unravel in front of them in mysterious ways amidst great danger. The friends race to solve the mystery of their dreams before their dreams consume them.

Kinematical Theory of Spinning Particles

Kinematical Theory of Spinning Particles

Autor: M. Rivas

Número de Páginas: 364

Classical spin is described in terms of velocities and acceleration so that knowledge of advanced mathematics is not required. Written in the three-dimensional notation of vector calculus, it can be followed by undergraduate physics students, although some notions of Lagrangian dynamics and group theory are required. It is intended as a general course at a postgraduate level for all-purpose physicists. This book presents a unified approach to classical and quantum mechanics of spinning particles, with symmetry principles as the starting point. A classical concept of an elementary particle is presented. The variational statements to deal with spinning particles are revisited. It is shown that, by explicitly constructing different models, symmetry principles are sufficient for the description of either classical or quantum-mechanical elementary particles. Several spin effects are analyzed.
