Cézanne and America

Cézanne and America

Autor: John Rewald

Número de Páginas: 352

The classic work by internationally acclaimed Cézanne scholar John Rewald In Cézanne and America, John Rewald presents a full account of how Paul Cézanne’s reputation and influence became established in America between 1891 and 1921, and of how some of the world’s largest collections of his works were formed in the United States. This is the fascinating story of enthusiastic young American artists who took up Cézanne’s cause after they discovered him in Paris. It is also the story of the discerning early American collectors of his work—Leo and Gertrude Stein, the Havemeyers, and John Quinn, among others—many of whom made their first purchases from Cézanne’s wily dealer Ambroise Vollard in Paris, or from the dealer Alfred Stieglitz in New York, and of the beginning of the famous collection of Dr. Albert C. Barnes. Each chapter is illustrated not only with Cézanne’s works but also with portraits of collectors and critics and with previously unpublished pages from diaries, dealers’ ledgers, and Cézanne’s own correspondence.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ALICE B. TOKLAS (Modern Classics Series)

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ALICE B. TOKLAS (Modern Classics Series)

Autor: Gertrude Stein

Número de Páginas: 260

In "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," Gertrude Stein artfully crafts a narrative that is as much about identity and the role of the artist as it is a vivid portrait of the avant-garde lifestyle in early 20th-century Paris. Written in the distinctive, idiosyncratic prose style characteristic of Stein, this work employs a unique first-person perspective through the eyes of her lifelong partner, Alice Toklas. The text serves not only as a memoir but also as a groundbreaking exploration of gender and creativity, encapsulating the dynamic relationships among notable contemporaries such as Hemingway, Picasso, and Matisse within the vibrant cultural milieu of the time. Stein, an American expatriate and a leading figure in modernist literature, was deeply influenced by her own experiences within the art community of Paris. Her relationship with Toklas, who played an instrumental role in her literary career, propelled Stein to create a work that merges autobiographical elements with a vivid recounting of their shared lives. Stein's bold experimentation with language and form reflects her belief in the transformative power of art, a vision that stemmed from her challenging societal...

Auctioneers Who Made Art History

Auctioneers Who Made Art History

Autor: Dirk Boll

Número de Páginas: 271

Procurement analysis, sales planning, customer orientation, brand management—the art market is changing more rapidly than ever before. The price that a work of art commands influences its place in the art-historical canon. Auction houses have become dominant avenues of distribution, as have art fairs, galleries, and art dealers. Even today the ritual dramaturgy of the auction resembles an archaic competition, which can leave participants speechless and captivate bystanders. At the center of the action is the auctioneer, whose performance is increasingly critical to the success of the auction. With portraits of auctioneers, this volume tells the story of the art auction business. Key events that played out in cities such as New York, Paris, Zurich, Berlin, Stuttgart, and Pompeii come alive and show how the auctioneer is emerging from the anonymity of a service provider and stepping into the limelight as the star of the show. (Deutsche Ausgabe ISBN 978-3-7757-3902-3) In conjunction printed volumes (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-3902-3, English edition ISBN 978-3-7757-3903-0) are also available.

Preaching and New Worlds

Preaching and New Worlds

Autor: Timothy Johnson , Katherine Shelby , John Young

Número de Páginas: 541

This collection of essays examines the polyvalent concept of "New Worlds" in the context of medieval and early modern sermon studies. While the terms "Old World" and "New World" are commonplace in studies of Europe and the Americas, this volume explores how preaching in the Atlantic world and beyond creatively engaged audiences in addressing new cultural and religious perspectives regardless of their geographical location and time period. The identification of the "other" in sermons is already an implicit recognition of a novel world, which could be equally enticing and intimidating. The scholars represented in this volume examine a wide panorama of medieval and early modern efforts as they identify how sermons, which often served as a highly effective media of mass communication, reflect shifting identities, sometimes contested and sometimes embraced, within long-standing traditional constructs. Particular themes include apocalypticism, art and mission, cultural interaction, multilingualism, forms of religious life, and theological innovation.

Inadvertent Images

Inadvertent Images

Autor: Peter Geimer

Número de Páginas: 257

As an artistic medium, photography is uniquely subject to accidents, or disruptions, that can occur in the making of an artwork. Though rarely considered seriously, those accidents can offer fascinating insights about the nature of the medium and how it works. With Inadvertent Images, Peter Geimer explores all kinds of photographic irritation from throughout the history of the medium, as well as accidental images that occur through photo-like means, such as the image of Christ on the Shroud of Turin, brought into high resolution through photography. Geimer’s investigations complement the history of photographic images by cataloging a corresponding history of their symptoms, their precarious visibility, and the disruptions threatened by image noise. Interwoven with the familiar history of photography is a secret history of photographic artifacts, spots, and hazes that historians have typically dismissed as “spurious phenomena,” “parasites,” or “enemies of the photographer.” With such photographs, it is virtually impossible to tell where a “picture” has been disrupted—where the representation ends and the image noise begins. We must, Geimer argues, seek to keep...

The Twenty-Seventh Letter of the Alphabet

The Twenty-Seventh Letter of the Alphabet

Autor: Kim Adrian

Número de Páginas: 304

Clear-sighted, darkly comic, and tender, The Twenty-Seventh Letter of the Alphabet is about a daughter’s struggle to face the Medusa of generational trauma without turning to stone. Growing up in the New Jersey suburbs of the 1970s and 1980s in a family warped by mental illness, addiction, and violence, Kim Adrian spent her childhood ducking for cover from an alcoholic father prone to terrifying acts of rage and trudging through a fog of confusion with her mother, a suicidal incest survivor hooked on prescription drugs. Family memories were buried—even as they were formed—and truth was obscured by lies and fantasies. In The Twenty-Seventh Letter of the Alphabet Adrian tries to make peace with this troubled past by cataloguing memories, anecdotes, and bits of family lore in the form of a glossary. But within this strategic reckoning of the past, the unruly present carves an unpredictable path as Adrian’s aging mother plunges into ever-deeper realms of drug-fueled paranoia. Ultimately, the glossary’s imposed order serves less to organize emotional chaos than to expose difficult but necessary truths, such as the fact that some problems simply can’t be solved, and that...

The Films of Steven Spielberg

The Films of Steven Spielberg

Autor: Charles L. P. Silet

Número de Páginas: 318

Steven Spielberg has fashioned an enviable career as a writer, producer, and director of American motion pictures, winning Academy Awards for Best Direction (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List), and for Best Film (Schindler's List). With David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg he founded Dreamworks SKG, already one of the most productive and respected studios in Hollywood. Despite Spielberg's notable successes, however, his films have not avoided controversy. The Films of Steven Spielberg provides for the first time a collection of critical writings by professional film critics about the director and his films, bringing together many articles and reviews scattered in often inaccessible specialist publications and professional journals. The opinions vary from complimentary to critical, but they definitely provide a well-rounded view of the films and the director. Twelve of Spielberg's major box office hits, including Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, are discussed in essays that vary in complexity ranging from the...

The Intimacy of Images

The Intimacy of Images

Autor: Myriam Lamrani

Número de Páginas: 239

La Santa Muerte becomes a lens for understanding how Oaxacans relate to saints, loved ones, and other “special dead.” In Oaxaca, images of saints and loved ones, as well as of victims of political or criminal violence, are seemingly everywhere. While Oaxacans relate to all sorts of “special dead,” they are particularly devoted to La Santa Muerte (Saint Death), a female reaper-like figure whose popularity has risen in tandem with violence throughout Mexico. The Intimacy of Images recontextualizes Oaxacans’ relationships with their “special dead” through the lens of La Santa Muerte, examining how devotees closely interact with what Lamrani terms “intimate images”: not only devotional effigies but also photographs, films, tattoos, and murals, and even dreams and visions. Though Mexicans have a well-known cultural familiarity with death, Lamrani argues that devotion to La Santa Muerte builds upon this intimacy even as it also participates in the production of terror and reflects political and criminal violence. Ultimately, Lamrani finds that these human-image interactions represent more than Catholic devotion; they reveal the secrets of Oaxacan political, religious,...
