Des/memorias

Des/memorias

Autor: Varios Autores , Silvia Spitta , Valeria Wagner

Papalotero

Papalotero

Autor: Martin Boyd

Número de Páginas: 255

Teresa Jones’s dreams of flying contrast sharply with her dreary, earthbound life working as a filing-clerk in a CD store, and suffering the constant nagging of her academic parents, who are outraged at her stubborn refusal to go to college. Her best friend – the popular, successful and apparently happy college freshman Elena Kravchuk – has the perfect prescription for Teresa’s depression: she needs to get laid. When the two girls meet Miguel Angel Ramirez, a misfit Mexican immigrant who builds and flies kites for a living, Elena goes to work as match-maker to bring him together for a casual fling with her socially awkward, chronically depressed best friend. But rather than providing a one night stand, this papalotero will transform the lives of both girls in ways that neither one bargained for: Elena will confront the truth that her life is not as perfect as she so desperately wants people to believe it is, while Teresa will be challenged to give up her low self-esteem and Life Sucks t-shirts, and discover that the happiness she thinks is out of her reach might actually be just one small leap of faith away.

Pharmacological Slavery

Autor: Vance Hodge

Número de Páginas: 184

Drug abuse and addiction are pervasive problems that have plagued humankind throughout the millenniacurrent times being no exception. Many personalized accounts of such activities fill the literature; while the biomedical community continually generates copious amounts of information on the subject. Yet, few authors have provided us with a philosophical examination of this dilemma. This book seeks to help fill this voidas it was written to examine the psychosocial forces at work underlying this problem. Coupled to a cursory coverage of some of the biological aspects of addiction, this text looks at the human condition and focuses upon the day-to-day challenges facing substance abusers, and their effects upon society. Calling upon the collective wisdom of our forefathers and foremothers, combined with our own introspection; solutions for breaking the chains of chemical bondage, and suggestions for living and staying clean are provided. Between our own common sense and that of those who came before us, and a careful [and honest] reflection on the subject, this book optimistically supplies us with the tools necessary for achieving this goalthat we might become the persons we were...

The Paradox of Ugliness Photographic questions about the beautiful appearance of ugliness or the ugly appearance of beauty

Autor: Annelie, Franke

The Slave's Little Friends

The Slave's Little Friends

Autor: Carme Manuel

Número de Páginas: 788

The texts included in this anthology illustrate the wide range of possibilities that abolitionist writings offered to American children during the first half of the nineteenth century. Composing their works under the wings of the antislavery movement, authors responded to the unequal and controversial development of abolitionist politics during the decades that led up to the outbreak of the Civil War. These writers struggled to teach children “to feel right,” and attempted to instruct them to actively respond to the injustice of the slavery system as rendered visible by a harrowing visual archive of suffering bodies compiled by both English and American antislavery promoters. Reading was equated with knowledge and knowledge was equated with moral responsibility, and therefore reading about “the abominations of slavery” became an act of emotional personal transformation. Children were thus turned into powerful agents of political change and potential activists to spread the abolitionist message. Invited to comply with a higher law that entailed the breaking of their nation’s edicts, they were morally rewarded by the Christian God and approvingly applauded by their elders...

Entre dos Américas

Entre dos Américas

Autor: Guillermina Walas

Número de Páginas: 180

In Entre dos Américas, Guillermina Walas explores the importance of memory for Latina authors. These authors are displaced from their familiar roots in Latin America and the Hispanic Caribbean, and find themselves immersed in their actual individual lives in the United States. These women construct or re-build a new Latina identity based on memory and the past, but also project to a future located in the Anglo-American context. The resulting identity is complex, riddled with cultural conflict that often involves class and gender. Walas analyzes many texts including, Silent Dancing: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood (1990) and When I was Puerto Rican (1993) by Judith Ortiz Cofer and Esmerelda Santiago, Dreaming in Cuban (1992) by Cristina García, and How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991) by Julia Alvarez. Discursos, mujeres y artes. ¿Construyendo o derribando fronteras?.

Autor: Romina Grana
