The Mind of a Murderer

The Mind of a Murderer

Autor: Richard Taylor

Número de Páginas: 421

'An intricate and brilliantly written psychiatric perspective on the most perplexing of crimes' Kerry Daynes, author of The Dark Side of the Mind 'Beautifully written and very dark' Nimco Ali OBE 'Whodunnit' doesn't matter so much, not to a forensic psychiatrist. We're more interested in the 'why'. In his twenty-six years in the field, Richard Taylor has worked on well over a hundred murder cases, with victims and perpetrators from all walks of life. In this fascinating memoir, Taylor draws on some of the most tragic, horrific and illuminating of these cases - as well as dark secrets from his own family's past - to explore some of the questions he grapples with every day: Why do people kill? Does committing a monstrous act make someone a monster? Could any of us, in the wrong circumstances, become a killer? As Taylor helps us understand what lies inside the minds of those charged with murder - both prisoners he has assessed and patients he has treated - he presents us with the most important challenge of all: how can we even begin to comprehend the darkest of human deeds, and why it is so vital that we try? The Mind of a Murderer is a fascinating exploration into the psyche of...

The Mind of the Murderer

The Mind of the Murderer

Autor: W. Lindesay Neustatter

Número de Páginas: 223

This study by a British psychologist explores the relationship between mental illness, murder, and the Homicide Act of 1957. In 1957, a new bill went before Parliament addressing the use of capital punishment in cases of murder. It sparked a debate—as relevant today as it was then—about how to prosecute a killer who suffers a mental illness or disability. In order to shed light on the terms of this argument, psychologist W. L. Neustatter published this study of recent homicide cases that touched on the subject. Here, Neustatter examines the minds of murderers known to be schizophrenic or psychopathic, or suffer from such conditions as epilepsy or paranoia. He also looks at a case of murder under hypnosis; a man who made, then retracted, his guilty confession; and a variety of other cases that fall into a troubling grey area of culpability.

The Mind of a Murderer

Autor: Katherine Ramsland

Número de Páginas: 233

This unique history of the last 100 years of criminal psychology shares insights about infamous murderers from the psychiatrists and other trained psychological professionals who analyzed and treated them. The Mind of a Murderer: Privileged Access to the Demons That Drive Extreme Violence presents a series of cases in which a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor gained privileged access to a mass or serial murderer, going beyond the typical mental assessment to learn more about criminal behavior. Through their work, readers are granted a unique view of criminology and a better understanding of the criminal mind. The book opens with the earliest professional observations of criminals in the late 19th century and goes on to explore the rudimentary behavioral profiling and case analysis of the early 20th century. It shows how, by the 1960s and 1970s, behavioral professionals recognized the need for intense study of extreme offenders and got close to the likes of Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy to gain a fuller picture of their psychological development. Finally, readers learn how today's behavioral professionals rely on neurobiological correlates to assess...

An Uncanny Revenge, or Nick Carter and the Mind Murderer

Autor: Nick Carter

Número de Páginas: 141

Excerpt: "The members of Nick Carter's household all happened to meet at the breakfast table that morning—a rather unusual circumstance. The famous New York detective sat at the head of the table. Ranged about it were Chick Carter, his leading assistant; Patsy Garvan, and the latter's young wife, Adelina, and Ida Jones, Nick's beautiful woman assistant. It was the latter who held the attention of her companions at that moment. She was a little late, and had just seated herself. Her flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes gave no hint that she had reached the house—they all shared the detective's hospitable roof—a little after three o'clock that morning. "You good people certainly missed a sensation last night," she declared. "It was the strangest thing—and one of the most pitiable I ever beheld!" Nick, who had been glancing at his favorite newspaper, looked up. "What do you mean?" he asked. It was Ida's turn to show surprise. "Is it possible you don't know, any of you?" she demanded, looking around the table. "Haven't you read of Helga Lund's breakdown, or whatever it was?" Helga Lund, the great Swedish actress, who was electrifying New York that season in a powerful play, "The...

The Doctor Dissected

The Doctor Dissected

Autor: Caroline Mccracken-flesher

Número de Páginas: 287

In 1828, Robert Knox was Edinburgh's charismatic anatomist - but eager medical students needed corpses to practice on, and Knox was supplied by the murderers Burke and Hare. The Doctor Dissected shows how this local crime became a trauma that echoes down the years as fact and fiction and into modern media - particularly in Scotland. Because Knox refused to speak, and national author Walter Scott would not speak for him, Scottish newspapers filled the silence with speculation. Worse, for a society that worried about the medical uncertainty of death, and whether the dead might arise, Knox's subjects loomed larger the longer their story remained untold. Victorian attempts to end the story only gave it new energy: evangelical writers could not account for the doctor; Robert Louis Stevenson turned him into Jekyll and Hyde. Melodramas tried to demonize Knox, but by the 1930s his scandal had extended to implicate a complicit public in James Bridie's plays. The 1970s could then read villains as victims of society - until Alasdair Gray gave contentious voice to actual victims in Poor Things. Today, Burke and Hare seem harmless, populating detective stories for children; they drive a...
