The Virgin Diaries

Autor: Kimberley A. Johnson , Ralph Faust

Número de Páginas: 0

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY?Seventy-two men and women answer that burning question.Hundreds of years of collective experience answer the questions every virgin has. THE VIRGIN DIARIES is a book about sex that really isn't about sex at all. Rather, it's about the feelings associated with that first time: wondering about it, worrying about it, the expectations, the surprises and the disappointments. Within these pages are the recollections of seventy-two people, young and old, gay and straight, who responded to the call for answers. This candid collection of stories provides a unique opportunity to be a fly on the wall. There is no commentary. The stories stand on their own, allowing the reader to form his or her own conclusions. Whether you are a virgin and desire to make an informed decision, a parent faced with "the talk" or are interested in reading detailed accounts of one of life's most personal experiences, THE VIRGIN DIARIES offers confidential insights and illustrates the commonalities we all share: our hopes, dreams, fears and insecurities. It shows that we are all human and therefore, all connected.

Dressed to Kill

Dressed to Kill

Autor: Elizabeth Rhodes

Número de Páginas: 249

The noble wives in María de Zayas's Desengaños suffer terrible fates: one is beheaded, another poisoned, one is cemented into a chimney, while yet another is locked into a tiny wall closet where she dies. The hallmark of Zayas's aesthetics, these characters are the central reason why her fiction has increased in popularity through the ages. Yet their stories pose an apparent contradiction between the author's pro-female rhetoric and her gusto for killing model women, then beautifying their mutilated cadavers. Dressed to Kill reconciles Zayas's Desengaños with the age in which it was written, contextualizing the book in baroque poetics, the Spanish honour code, and fifteenth-century martyr saints' lives. Elizabeth Rhodes elegantly uncovers Zayas's intention to reform the Spanish nobility by displaying noble misbehaviour and its deadly consequences. Her book concludes by detailing the Desengaños' intriguing influence on the aesthetic base of Gothic literature by revealing that its authors were avid readers of Zayas.

Image and Memory

Image and Memory

Autor: Wendy Watriss , Lois Parkinson Zamora

Número de Páginas: 472

FotoFest 1992, a major festival of international photography, brought Latin American photography into focus for a wide audience. Offering a diverse selection of photographers, countries, artistic movements, and subject matter, the show revealed a photographic tradition rich in history and creativity. Drawing from the more than 1,000 images exhibited by FotoFest, this book documents the work of fifty-two photographers from ten countries. The photographs range from the opening of the Brazilian frontier in the 1880s to a secret archive of documentary images from El Salvador's recent civil war to works of specifically aesthetic intent. Many of the photographs appear here in print for the first time. Watriss's opening essay provides the curatorial overview for the book. Lois Zamora examines the roots of visual image-making in Latin American cultures. Boris Kossoy addresses the history of Latin American photography through the nineteenth century, while Fernando Castro covers the contemporary scene. With its compelling images and English-Spanish text, this book will serve as a benchmark for future studies of photography in Latin America.

Fiestas, la mística del norte argentino

Fiestas, la mística del norte argentino

Autor: Paqui Arias , Santiago Lofeudo

The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic

The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic

Autor: Matthew Bailey

Número de Páginas: 161

'Matthew Bailey's work on medieval Hispanic epic poetry is most impressive. It is a unique contribution to our knowledge of the Old Spanish epic and offers a highly original advance in its field. This book will, of course, primarily be of interest to Hispano-Medievalists, but given its enlightened and far-reaching views - based on very wide reading - it will also be of significant interest to all medievalists and folklorists, regardless-of specialty'-Samuel Armistead, Department of Spanish, University of California, Davis The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic explores the composition of manuscript texts in thirteenth-century Spain. Of the vernacular epic poems originating with the minstrels of this era, only three full-length works remain: Cantar de Mio Cid, Poema de Fernßn Gonzßlez, and Mocedades de Rodrigo, all preserved and recorded by members of the clergy. By analysing expressive traits found in these three poems, Matthew Bailey links them to the cognitive processes that take place in the minds of speakers as narration unfolds. In Latin and other vernacular texts from the same period, authors identify their sources as oral, describe oral compositional...

THE LIMPIA IN THE MESOAMERICAN ETHNOMEDICINES

THE LIMPIA IN THE MESOAMERICAN ETHNOMEDICINES

Autor: Alfonso J. Aparicio Mena , Francesco Ludovico Di

Número de Páginas: 74

A limpia (?cleansing?, in the Spanish language) is a physical?symbolic method, used in the Mesoamerican traditional medical practices, to reach a new balance. The verb «to clean» means «make something or someone free of dirt, mess or defects». When what is removed is visible, the result of ?cleaning? is an objective fact; when, however, the alteration, the defect, the block inside the person is symbolic (?energetic?), the limpia becomes an act of faith, a physical ritual that is a step away from the sacred or the traditional. In fact, according to Mesoamerican natives, the human being is built up also by ?something more? than the body: this is a kind of vital energy that is an integral part of all creatures, and of course the human being. Not specific of Mesoamerican worldview, the ?spiritual vibration? is communicated, with other discursive images, by other ethnic groups coming from all around the world. Mesoamerican people, thus, think that health problems have not only corporal or psychological causes and relations but ?energetic? too. The limpia makes the person connected with itself and with its own environment (biological, community and of cultural beliefs); its purpose...

Papers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2003 (see also Studia Patristica 40, 41, 42 and 43). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.
