Mountain Witches

Mountain Witches

Autor: Noriko T. Reider

Número de Páginas: 239

Mountain Witches is a comprehensive guide to the complex figure of yamauba—female yōkai often translated as mountain witches, who are commonly described as tall, enigmatic women with long hair, piercing eyes, and large mouths that open from ear to ear and who live in the mountains—and the evolution of their roles and significance in Japanese culture and society from the premodern era to the present. In recent years yamauba have attracted much attention among scholars of women’s literature as women unconstrained by conformative norms or social expectations, but this is the first book to demonstrate how these figures contribute to folklore, Japanese studies, cultural studies, and gender studies. Situating the yamauba within the construct of yōkai and archetypes, Noriko T. Reider investigates the yamauba attributes through the examination of narratives including folktales, literary works, legends, modern fiction, manga, and anime. She traces the lineage of a yamauba image from the seventh-century text Kojiki to the streets of Shibuya, Tokyo, and explores its emergence as well as its various, often conflicting, characteristics. Reider also examines the adaptation and...

Body Politics and the Fictional Double

Body Politics and the Fictional Double

Autor: Debra Walker King

Número de Páginas: 238

Body Politics and the Fictional Double Edited by Debra Walker King Examines the disjunction between women's appearance and reality. In recent years, questions concerning "the body" and its place in postmodern discourses have taken center stage in academic disciplines. Body Politics joins these discussions by focusing on the challenges women face when their externally defined identities and representations as bodies -- their body fictions -- speak louder than what they know to be their true selves. Racialized, gendered, or homophobic body fictions disfigure individuals by placing them beneath a veil of invisibility and by political, emotional, or spiritual suffocation. As objects of interpretation, "female bodies" in search of health care, legal assistance, professional respect, identity confirmation, and financial security must first confront their fictionalized doubles in a collision that, in many cases, ends in disappointment, distress, and even suicide. The contributors reflect on women's day-to-day lives and the cultural productions (literature, MTV, film, etc.) that give body fictions their power and influence. By exploring how these fictions are manipulated politically,...

Yamanba

Yamanba

Autor: Rossella Marangoni

Inter- and Transcultural Learning in the Context of Canadian Young Adult Fiction

Inter- and Transcultural Learning in the Context of Canadian Young Adult Fiction

Autor: Grit Alter

Número de Páginas: 379

Within the past few years transcultural learning has become one of the key terms in TEFL theory. Central concerns in current research include differentiating between inter- and transcultural learning, navigating processes of understanding otherness, and assessing cultural competences. Using these aspects this study investigates texts recommended for cultural learning and key components of implementing literature in ELT. The results call for a more holistic perception of alterity and argue in favour of transcultural literature as a basis for transcultural learning. All of this dissertation is in English. Eurasia

Eurasia

Autor: Falero Folgoso, Alfonso J. , Doncel Abad, David , Rodríguez Cruz, Jorge

Joy, Despair, Illusion, Dreams

Joy, Despair, Illusion, Dreams

Número de Páginas: 356

Nō drama, which integrates speech, song, dance, music, mask, and costume into a distinctive art form, is among Japan’s most revered cultural traditions. It gained popularity in the fourteenth century, when the actor and playwright Zeami (1363–1443) drew the favor of the shogun with his theatrical innovations. Nō’s intricacies and highly stylized conventions continue to attract Japanese and Western appreciation, and a repertoire of some 250 plays is performed today. Joy, Despair, Illusion, Dreams presents a selection of Nō plays, magnificently rendered in English by Royall Tyler, an eminent scholar and translator of classical Japanese literature. It includes both canonical and lesser-known works of Zeami’s, as well as anonymous works. Several are outside the established repertoire, offering glimpses of Nō before the tradition was codified in the Edo period, and have not previously been translated into English. An introduction describes the structure, formal features, and performance conventions of Nō plays, and brief essays precede each work. Through Tyler’s authoritative scholarship and keen ear for the subtlety and beauty of the language, Joy, Despair, Illusion,...

A Translation of Ryôjinhishô, a Compendium of Japanese Folk Songs (Imayô) from the Heian Period, 794-1185

A Translation of Ryôjinhishô, a Compendium of Japanese Folk Songs (Imayô) from the Heian Period, 794-1185

Autor: Gladys E. Nakahara

Número de Páginas: 376

What CHOICE says: The Ryoojinhishoo provides rare insight into the lives and culture of common people in the Heian period. Songs of prostitutes, cormorant fishermen, children, gamblers, and mothers voice timeless emotions. The other scholarly monograph in English on the Ryoojinhishoo, Yung-Hee Kim's outstanding Songs to Make the Dust Dance (CH, Jul'94), provides a translation of 222 of the extant songs and gives a full account of Emperor Go-Shirakawa's relationship to the collection. Nakahara includes translations of all 571 extant songs, and her introduction sets the songs in the context of a masterfully reconstructed history of the folk-song genre. The previously untranslated songs include many on Buddhist themes. These songs are a priceless record of how ordinary people in the Heian period understood Buddhism; indeed, their existence refutes the notion that popular Buddhism began in the Kamakura period. Nakahara's translations, accompanied by romanized versions of the original, are fluid and well annotated. This fine work is both scholarly and imminently accessible in style and content. When the print-run of this hard-cover edition is exhausted, some press should consider it...
