Die vorliegende Studie untersucht drei bedeutende lateinamerikanische Diktatorenromane des 20. Jahrhunderts und den in ihnen dargestellten Machtmißbrauch. Sie eröffnet einen Zugang zu der Vielfalt von Parallelen, die zwischen Literatur und Realität in einer Diktatur gezogen werden können. Die Analyse der Werke Roa Bastos', Asturias' und Carpentiers zeigt nicht nur die subtilen oder brutalen Mittel zur Erlangung und Wahrung der Macht, sondern auch psychologische Auswirkungen des Machtmißbrauchs, Korruption, doppelte Moral, Macht von Sprache und Schrift und wirtschaftliche Abhängigkeit des Diktators vom Ausland. Gleichzeitig wird deutlich, inwiefern die Autoren der Diktatorenromane mit ihren Werken einen Aufruf zu einer gerechteren Machtverteilung in ihrem Land bewirken wollen.

Número de Páginas: 336Viewing stories and novels from an ethnographic perspective, Eduardo González here explores the relationship between myth, ritual, and death in writings by Borges, Vargas Llosa, Cortázar, and Roa Bastos. He then weaves this analysis into a larger cultural fabric composed of the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Joyce, Benjamin, H. G. Wells, Kafka, Poe, and others. What interests González is the signature of authorial selfhood in narrative and performance, which he finds willfully and temptingly disfigured in the works he examines: horrific and erotic, subservient and tyrannical, charismatic and repellent. Searching out the personal image and plot, González uncovers two fundamental types of narrative: one that strips character of moral choice; and another in which characters' choices deprive them of personal autonomy and hold them in ritual bondage to a group. Thus The Monstered Self becomes a study of the conflict between individual autonomy and the stereotypes of solidarity. Drawing upon anthropology and literary theory, this book explores the representation of orality by major Spanish American anthropologist-writers: Lydia Cabrera, Jose Maria Arguedas, and Miguel Barnet. These writers played a quintessential role of the Spanish American writer from colonial times to the present: they inscribed the mythical world of a vanishing Other by creating a poetic effect of orality in their ethnographies and narratives. This book argues that supposed differences between oral and written culture are rhetorical devices in the elaboration of literature, specifically modern fiction in Spanish America. Fictionalization of the oral requires adherence to the theory of a great divide between orality and literacy. Because the texts considered here are predicated on the ideality of speech, a contradiction underlies their shared desire to salvage oral tradition.
